Means With The Sound From Their Own Ends / Ends As The Sound From Their Own Means
recording protocol and performance score for ensemble

2020

Means With The Sound From Their Own Ends / Ends As The Sound From Their Own Means is a recording protocol that can lead to two pieces:

Ends As The Sound From Their Own Means:

recording protocol for 8 performers leading to a video piece

Scripted individual meetings between a composer, a conductor and eight musicians are videotaped and recorded. The resulting audiovisual documents, containing traces of every sound and action necessary to implement a found piece (LaMonte Young - Composition 1960#7), are presented simultaneously.

Means With The Sound From Their Own Ends

recording and performance protocols for 8 performers, conductor and composer; 8-channel audio

Scripted individual meetings between a composer, a conductor and musicians are recorded. The totality of sounds produced during the implementation of a found musical piece (LaMonte Young - Composition 1960#7) is recorded and played back during one of its actual performances.

General description of the process:

1) The performers receive instructions to be carried out privately and mentally, without making any sound, in order to generate a list of instrumental techniques as material to be used in the next phases of the work. At this point, the ensemble members should not know the work on which the piece is based yet.

2) A first meeting is organised between each individual musician and the composer, the conductor and possibly a person in charge of the recording. During these sessions, each musician individually presents, demonstrates and discusses the (not yet played) results of the first score with the composer. All participants of the meeting (except the possible recording person) follow a script coordinated by the conductor. This script consists of a set cues corresponding to different stages of the rehearsal. The purpose of this first session is twofold: generating the material necessary to write the performance score and giving a minimal rehearsing time to the musicians (no rehearsal should happen outside of the recording sessions).

If the process stops at this point, the result is to be presented as a fixed-media work consisting on the simultaneous presentation of the video and audio recordings of the meetings. Its title is then “Ends as the sound from their own means”.

3) With the material generated during the individual recording sessions, the composer writes further personalized instructions aimed at a performance.

4) A "dress rehearsal" with all people involved happens before the performance. This time, the complete ensemble is present for the recording session and all follow a common series of instructions also directed by the conductor. The performance score written after the first series of meetings is given at this point. There is no additional meeting or rehearsal time afterwards.

5) During the concert, the ensemble members listen to the recording of their first meeting live in front of the audience and try to react to four situations (silence, instrumental playing, oneself speaking, someone else speaking) according to the newly written performance score. This outcome of the protocol is titled “Means with the sound from their own ends.”
